Bușteni, Cantacuzino castle

The castle was built by Ghe.Grigore Cantacuzino (1832-1913) the descendant of a Byzantine noble family, attested in 1094. He was a political man, mayor of the capital (1869-1870, 1913), minister in several governments, prime minister 1899-1900, 1904-1907) and President of the Conservative Party (1899-1907). The castle was built between 1901 and 1908, on the site of a family hunting house, according to the plans of the architect Grigore Cerchez, in the Neo-Romanian style. It has the shape of a quadrilateral, with its southern side open. The castle stretches over an area of 3148 sqm, and the courtyard and the 3,5 ha garden.

The area also includes 970 ha of forest. The interiors are beautifully decorated, the paintings of the Cantacuzino family are made of Cordoba leather. The pottery is Italian, the Romanian mosaic. The ceilings are carved, framed and painted with floral motifs.

The railings are made of wrought iron or wood, Carrara marble stairs, the interior columns are decorated in Brancoven style. In the Ballroom we can admire the collection of heraldry, unique in our country. The doors are decorated with the family blazon, the stained glasses are particularly beautiful.

The church in the yard built between 1933-36 was brought by Cantacuzino from Maramures and sanctified in the presence of the Queen Maria.
