The first documentary attestation of the settlement is from 1220-1224. Over time, Ciacova was also called Csák, Tschakowa, Chaak, Chaac, Czokoa, Czakona, Czakova, Czakowa, Zakovia, Zakovar, Schakowan. Between 1390-1394 the city fortress was built, a strong fortress surrounded by a true network of canals. Between 1551 and 1697, the Turks dominate it, and turn it into a fortress, the strongest part being the 4-storey tower, which is still visible today. Over the years, three churches have been raised: Roman Catholic, Serbian and Orthodox.
