Orșova, Orthodox Church

The Saint Nicolae orthodox church is situated in the southern part of the town. Its origins date back to the year of 1660. It was a very tiny and modest church those times, as small amount of prayers were visiting it.

In 1743 there started the constructions of the big church by the well-off macedo-romanian families, with the contribution of the population. From the small old church there had nothing been kept. Iconography was painted by Victor Dimonescu from Lugoj. Within the years 1968-72 the constructions of the new hydroelectric station Portile de Fier I. forced this church to be moved a bit upper on the river bank to the place where we can find it nowadays.

During the constructions the old plans were used, trying to protect it, and implement it into the new surroundings, however, the new church was bigger with a height of 1.5 m.
