Berchezoaia, Chioar fortress

In south-east of Berchezoaia near high Lăpușului curve, on the left, at the height of 407 m was lifted Chioarului city. The fortress is certified in 1368. King Nagy Lajos in 1378 gave the fortress of the voivodes Balc and Drag.

Later on the owners list appears the families Bélteki and Drágffy. János Szapolyai in 1526, the last Habsburg Transylvania and principles are the masters of the city. In 1567 Sigismund with the Turks it sp recover from the imperial city. According to a document from 1694 Chioarului city was surrounded by three parallel walls reinforced with towers and bastions. In the courtyard were church and annex buildings, and top city dwellings. In 1703 the fortress reaches the hands of the courtiers and in 1715 Rabutin imperial general threw the fortress into the air.

What remained of the fortress was destroyed by the Tartars in 1717. In 1719 it belonged to Telki. The stones are used to build the fortress castle corner Șomcuta administrative building, but many were taken and local residents. Her ruins are still visible today.
