The building was built in the XVII century. In the XVIII-XIX centuries functioned here an inn. In the XIX century it was the most important political and cultural building of the city, gave here concert Johanes Brahms, Ferenc Liszt, Béla Bartók and George Enescu. The Transylvanian diet kept its sessions here as well what voted in 1865 the union of Transylvania and Hungary without being present the Romanian congressmen as well.

In 1894 here took place the cause of those intellectuals who addressed the warrant in 1892 to József Ferencz in what they advocated against the nation-destroying politics of the Hungarian government. The importance of the building decreased as the economical development started and it started the construction of bigger buildings. It gave place for a short time to the University of Arts. From 1959 on it gives place to the Transylvanian Folk-Art Museum.
